I don't understand... The hens are locked out of the garage at night, and the door opens to let them back in at morning? Surely, if the garage wasn't lighted, then hens wouldn't be awake at night. And yes, I'd worry more about 'possums, skunks, feral cats, weasels, etc. making their way into the coop for a meal at night when it is insecure.
we had a young girl like that who was the runt of the flock but get and escape anywhere it seemed. we thought she was a male at first so called her "Houdini" but later found out she was a she so shortened the name to "Houti". some are smarter than the average chicken as the saying goes. Who knew?
Chickens will not venture out in the dark. They don't see well. So just shut the light off in the garage. I'm surprised you didn't find droppings everywhere like I do. That is a very tiny box for chickens.

that was cute! And yes, chickens are very smart!!
Yes, if my girls are being naughty and in the neighbors yard, I call them home with a cat food for a treat!
Try opening the door at sun up, then they will not be in the garage. Chickens get up with the sun year round.
Great video. ~Gwen
Thanks, that certainly is good to know. Any info on those wily chickens is important!

I suspected soon after I got our chickens that they are not bird brains. Great video, will share it with my friends. Karin

Pretty bad when chickens are smarter than you. It's not that they are that smart, it's that you failed to secure the caging properly.
We got our lovely chookies about a year ago. We love them dearly but have also found their way into the cat food! Love the video! :)
Thanks for posting this video. Very interested in the background song.Could you pass along the artist name please and Thanks!

What do you use to automaticall open/shut the door?
The resolution is so poor you can't even see where and how the chicken got out. Dumb
loved the video, people under estimate chickens, they are brainer than we think, mine are certainly very knowing and crafty!

Even hens living in eglus like to play on the wild side once in a while! Thanks for the comic relief!
